Local government services and information for Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

Mecklenburg County contains seven (7) municipalities including the City of Charlotte and the towns of Cornelius, Davidson, and Huntersville (north of Charlotte); and the towns of Matthews, Mint Hill, and Pineville (south and east of Charlotte). A small portion of the town of Stallings is also in Mecklenburg County, though most of it is in Union County. Extra-territorial jurisdictions within the county are annexed by municipalities as soon as they reach sufficient concentrations.

One common school district, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), serves the entire county.

Afro-American Cultural Center
Black history and cultural values are nurtured and celebrated in the Afro-American Cultural Center. Originally the Little Rock AME Zion Church, the building was spared from demolition due to citizen outcry. The center now houses a performance place, an art gallery, a research and resource center, and educational classes.
Blumenthal Performing Arts Center

Carolina Raptor Center
The Carolina Raptor Center exists to provide public education on environmental issues and about the importance of raptors to our environment, to care for sick, injured and orphaned raptor, and to conduct and contribute to research about birds of prey. (located at Latta Plantation Park)
Carolinas Aviation Museum
The Carolinas Aviation Museum exhibits numerous items relating to flight in America. Exhibits at the museum include numerous flying and static aircraft (such as a replica of the Wright Brother’s #3 Glider), rockets and missiles. Restoration projects are open for public viewing.

Catawba Cultural Center
The Catawba Cultural Center on the Catawba Indian Reservation strives to preserve the heritage of the Catawba culture. A gift shop features the distinctive Catawba pottery and other items. Tours and programs demonstrating the Catawba’s culture and heritage are available by appointment.
The Charlotte Museum of History
The Charlotte Museum of History showcases the history of the Charlotte area. Permanent exhibits at the mueum include the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite, the American Freedom Bell and other exhibits from the 18th through 20th centuries.
Crowder’s Mountain State Park
This 2,148 acrea park is characterized by rugged peaks and breath taking views.
Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens
Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is a world-class facility under development near Charlotte. The Garden will eventually encompass 450 acres, making it one of the largest botanical gardens in North America.
Discovery Place
Charlotte’s award winning science and technology museum. Major attractions include the OMNIMAX Theater and the Morphus Motion Simulator. Other major attractions are a three-story rain forest, aquariums featuring boh fresh and salt water exhibits, Our Living Planet and Kid’s Place, an early childhood learning area. Many hands-on exhibits are also featured which teach basic principles of science. Live demonstrations by Discovery Place staff help visitors understand these principals and show why they’re important in our everyday lives.
Gaston County Museum of Art and History
This museum celebrates Gaston County’s heritage through it’s 19th century arts and artifacts.
Historic Brattonsville
Historic Brattonsville, which was one of the locations for the filming of the major motion picture “The Patriot,” is a 720-acre living history village and Revolutionary War battlefield site featuring 29 historic structures, including house museums that chronicle the development of the Carolina Piedmont from the 1750s through the 1840s. The Walt Schrader Trails feature eight miles of hiking, bicycling and horseback riding trails. Historic Brattonsville earned the Bundy Award, which is one of the top tourism awards given by the state.
King’s Mountain State Park
This 6,141 acre park features scenic drives and nature and hiking trails. Swimming, fishing and boating also available.
Latta Plantation
Historic Latta Plantation was a successful cotton plantation and is now a living history farm. Visitors experience what life was like for planters, slaves, and yeoman farmers of the North Carolina back country in the early 19th century.
Levine Museum of the New South
The Levine Museum of the New South houses the nation’s most comprehensive interpretation of post-Civil War Southern history. The Museum features interactive, multi-sensory exhibits which engage visitors of all ages. With vibrant, inviting spaces, the museum presents history that inspires and challenges, educates and delights.
Mint Museum
The Mint Museum of Art has diverse permanent collections and changing exhibitions of regional, national and international artists and cultures. Activities for adults and children include art classes, lectures, tours and independent films.
The Museum of York County
The Museum of York County is home to Stans African Hall, renowned throughout the world as the largest exhibition of hooved, mounted African mammals under one roof, along with displays of tribal dress and artifacts, art galleries, a planetarium, and nature trail. A gift shop and changing exhibits in the areas of natural history and the arts complete the experience.

The Rock Hill Center for the Arts
Located in downtown Rock Hill, The Center for the Arts houses office, studio, gallery and classroom space. The Dalton Gallery features six to eight regional/national exhibitions annually. Alternate galleries house the work of local artists and school children.
Schiele Nature Museum
Schiele may be best known for largest collection of land mammal specimens in the South East. Halls of geology, paleontology, archeology, mineralogy and anthropology are housed here.

Springs Close Greenway
The Anne Springs Close Greenway is a protected natural area north of Fort Mill with 2,300 acres that include such amenities as 14 miles of trails, 8 camping sites, a 35-acre reservoir for fishing and a nature center.

US National Whitewater Center
Take it outside at the world-class US National Whitewater Center.
